Sex- linked Information

Pics
You cannot use red sex links to make sex links. The hens have the gold gene, not the silver they need and the fathers have one gold and and silver. You don't know which one of those he will give to his offspring.

If you read the very first post in this thread, you will see where Tadkerson listed the different combinations that wil make sex links. Those lists are not all-inclusive. Some other breeds could work but there are so many different breeds you cannot list them all. And they will work for bantams as well as full sized breeds.

If you bought the black sex links from TSC, they should be from full sized fowl, but I sure cannot tell you which breeds they used. I'd expect them to get as large as your other pullets.

I'm not sure what a CW is. I'll probably be embarrassed for not recognizing it when I do see what it is, but nothing jumps out. Many roosters will make a black sex link with the BR and many different roosters will make a red sex link with the SLW or the Delaware. Technically, you could make black sex links with the Delaware too since they have the barred gene, but realistically, you won't be able to see the spot. They make red sex links too so that is what you would go by, I don't think any rooster will make sex links with your other breeds. Part of your problem though is that unless you segregate the hatching eggs, you will not know which chicks are sex links. The other hens can give you chicks that look like the sex links. Again, look at the first post on page one of this thread.

Many people think that they are good layers because they are sex links. Not all that true. They are usually good layers because their parents are good layers. You can cross a RIR with a BR and get a black sex link that will probably be a very good layer. If you take a BR rooster and a RIR hen from the same strains and cross them, you will not get a sex link but they will still lay just as well. On the other hand, if you take RIR and BR from any strains that are not bred for good egg production, the offspring will porobably not lay real well either, whether or not they are a sex link. The sex links you get from the hatcheries come from strains that lay well, so they should lay well.

If you swap out a new rooster every couple of years and select your pullets to keep with your breeding flock so you select the best pullets, you should have plenty of genetic diversity. You can bring in new hens too if you want to, but as long as you select your breeders to have the traits you want, you should be OK.

Thank you so much Ridge Runner, that helps alot,
I was worried some how they had bantams in with them, and I have all full sized birds I picked breeds that reach 9 or 10 lbs at maturity. I think The Delawares are a bit smaller 7 or 8 lbs maybe, but still large fowl. If they inter mingle I don't care I don't really want specific breeds right now maybe in the future, these are my first chickens, and I'm sort of just scoping out what breeds I like best, that's why I ordered 5 each, though I will have 10 speckled sussex, I love spotted anything, because my Mottled Ancona's sold out early so I exchanged them for 5 more SS, The CW is probably not the right abbreviation, they are Colombian Wyandottes. Took me almost 2 weeks to figure out what they were, I also have some mystery white chicks that I didn't order? packing peanuts? maybe Leghorns not sure, will have to wait and see what they look like in 3 months. I ordered assorted Wyandottes, and think I got 1 silver laced, 2 black laced, 3 Colombian. Though to me they are all cute, but I'm a fancier of color and lots of feathers, didn't order the cochins because we get so much snow here, ice storms and crap like today I was worried they wouldn't do good here with all those feathers on there feet.
If I do decide to ever make SexLinks I will definitely need help with that, hehe I seen the charts on page 1 but to me they look like mad scientists notes

TY so much again for clarifying a few things for me, will keep up to date on this thread though I like the pictures and the cool crosses.

My Cuckoo Maran hen when crossed with my black Jersey giant roo produced sex linked chicks. As expected by descriptions I have read all the males matured to have the hens barred feather coloring/pattern. All the hens are black like the JG. I did not see them on the crossing list. Is it usually any purebred black roo when crossed with the Cuckoo Maran will produce sexlinks and not just the breeds listed? I would like to increase my hen count with my Brabanter group and I am having trouble getting hens or eggs to hatch. What would be a good suggestion as a hen to cross to try the feather sexing?

If your Brabanter roo is gold, any silver or barred hens will produce sexlinks. As for your Cuckoo Marans hens, any roo who's not barred will make black sexlinks with them.

Color has nothing to do with feather sexing. If the male is pure for rapid feathering and the female has the slow gene, then you can feather sex, regardless of color. Did you look at feather sexing section in Tadkerson's first post on this thread? If your Brababter is pure for rapid feathering, he should be good to go if you have a hen that is slow to feather.

For some reason, I have more trouble with this one too, more than the red or black concepts. Instead of k and K, it helps me to change those to fast and slow. Slow and sure is dominant over fast and the hen only gives the dominant gene to her son.

Yup, he could be bred to ether silver(columbian, partridge, duckwing, ect.) or barred hens and make sexlinks.
