Sex linked traits

I need a bit of help. I crossed my blue birchen marans rooster with my cream legbar hen. The chicks with the spot on their heads (barring) should be male, correct? I’m asking bc mine are the opposite. I have a female with barring and a blue male. I’m so confused

I don't know anything about any of this ... but that chick with the white fluffy bottom is KILLING me! She/it is about the most adorable thing I have ever seen!

PS you could market that... I would buy pillows or stuffed animals made to look like that.

Yes the barred chick is a boy. I can’t see a picture of the top of the head of the blue chick. I’m assuming based on feathers that it doesn’t have barring, so girl.

How did you assume that the blue was a boy, and barred girl?

I was going by size and feathering. I checked the wings at a day old. The barred had textbook girl feathers. The blue chick didn’t have any wing feathers at all until it was about five days old. I thought a silkie had gotten in there somehow!

Oh okay. Trust the white dot on the head indicating boy.

Feather sexing is used in breeds where they have breed it to be accurate.

There’s genes that determine feather growth rate, etc... so it’s inaccurate to use that especially in a mixed chick.

It certainly looks like the opposite of what you may have expected(large male looking blue chick and small female looking barred chick) if the parents are really the ones you mention then the boy is the barred chick, if otherwise I am afraid that a CL rooster just jump faced and mated with the maran hens

Luckily I only have one rooster and one cream legbar!
