Sex-Links = short life span

Not much longer. I like having a couple in the flock, they do lay great.

When having a flock, I think it is important to consider having a multi-generational flock, some old, some young and some new. You don't keep individual chickens, keep a flock where birds come and go.

I did purchase some chicks this spring, some ameraucanas, EE's and 3 cream legbars, none are laying yet. The EEs are 22 weeks old now so hopefully will start soon, the others are a month or more younger. I'm hoping by fall my egg production is back up! Thanks for your reply!!

I read on a thread a few days ago about all of the problems with sex-links and early death rates. I can not find it now. I am freaking out. I love my sex-links, they are sweet and lay large eggs daily. We plan on keeping them until they die naturally and were hoping that they would live for years. I was reading the thread and it mentioned internal egg laying, being egg bound, and high rates of cancer in these hens causing them to dye within a year. Is this accurate? Is there anything that can be done to keep them healthy and living into the geriatric years?
Hi, I know this post is old but how long did yours lived? I have 3 and wanting to see what to expect. They are the sweetest ladies and love to cuddle and purr 🥺
