Whats the difference?? I have 5 new babies and can't tell the difference in sex, unless behavior has anything to do with it. Some of them come right up to me.

2 of the 5 are 5 weeks older than my 3 youngens'

I want to name them but I can't tell the gender??

This little guys are still too young to find the gender. In a couple of months you will be able to by looking at the wings. The female will get their solid wings and Male will be bared.

Deerman, How fool proof is that? We have had very good hatches this year and aren't quite "over run" but not to far from it and have some people wanting pairs but I want to make sure they get what they want.

Thanks
Steve

Doesn't seem to be an answer.

Does anybody else know about the wing feather color?

Steve

Sorry Steve, hard to show. compare the chicks next to each other.

To make sure check the new feathers for barring. Before selling pairs.

Thanks, I marked a couple by the feather color to see how it turns out. The only difference I have been able to see in the ES's is two seem to have lighter coloring in the face area. They are starting to get some nice green on the back of their necks, still flighty but getting better.

The flight feathers are not a fool-proof way to tell. The chicks are too young to tell gender. On my website I have a photo showing the difference on Wild type blue and Black Shoulder Blue. Other colors can be more difficult as the barring is muted in many of the lighter colors. Below are the comparison photos. Top is wild type (normal pattern) India Blue, Bottom is Black Shoulder India Blue. In both cases male is on the left. Note the clearer pattern to the feathers on the males. You can tell gender earlier on BlackShoulder than Wild type, and some girls lose their chick barring earlier than others. I have a few "Maybes" each year that take longer for me to be certain what they are
