It's not uncommon to find chickens (and unfortunately more common to EEs) with crossed beaks. This can be either top or bottom beak, and it can be a simple genetic cause, a complex genetic cause, or caused by incubation. Don't worry about it unless you see it starting, and that usually doesn't start after a couple of weeks. I've heard of one as late as 8 weeks, though, if I remember.
If it's something that developed after hatch, it's possible that it's either complex or incubation, from what I have read. It's simple if it hatched that way.
If it's complex, it may not re-appear until generations later, when another factor triggers re-emergence of the trait, like the other parent carrying something, or temp spike at just the wrong time. If it's incubation, it's just incubation. It could also be injury.
You have to breed to try to narrow down what the cause was, and it's obviously not worth it to most to go forward with anything and it's far simpler to cull the cross beak to start with...but I made a commitment and he's part of the family. I'd like to know whether he could be a daddy, though.
Whew! I got my (one) pullet from MPC, and she seems to be fine (and she is about 3 months old). I was just afraid I was missing something, but she seems fine (ad, I must admit, gorgeous...but I of course am partial!).
