sexing 1 day olds

I have watched that utube one on feather sexing about a thousand times and think I get it and when I go look at the birds I get all confused again! I think you need to look at about 1,000+ before you actually get it! All I know is that if the feathers are uneven it is a girl; even means a boy...Terri O

pullet- every other feather is smaller than teh last its an obvious size difference too dont have to get all close and use a magnifying glass either.

cockerels- all feathers are same sixe or somwhere near close.

Keep not that this way of sexing only works for about teh first 24 hours

I thought that feather sexing only worked with certain breeds. I think it's used with White Leghorns because it's important to the egg industry to identify the sexes right after hatch since the pullets & the cockerels receive such different handling. Maybe there are other breeds with which feather sexing works, but I don't think it works for every one. Otherwise no one would do vent sexing if there was another option. Would you?

Yep, if you try to feather sex most straight run chicks in a feed store bin, you may go home with a bunch of roosters.

Most are vent sexed at the hatchery. Sexlinks are sexable at hatch by the color and barred breeds like Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rocks and Dominiques may be sexed by several traits that are different in male and female, i.e., down color, head spot and color of the leg fronts.
