Hi!

I have 3-4 week old chicks and am wondering if one of them will be a rooster. One is supposed to be an olive egger, the other a blue-egg layer (mixed breed). I think they are about the same age (maybe a few days apart) but one has longer tail feathers than the other.

Any and all guidance would be appreciated!

Liz

Need better pictures, it's hard to tell with the red lighting. We need photos of each bird's face, tail, and stance if possible.

I think they're a bit young to tell at this age to be honest, I'd repost again at 6-8 weeks. Otherwise I'd say they look like pullets to me. Only questionable one to me is the dark one in the first photo laying in the background.

Just took some more pictures, hopefully they are better.

First two are of the olive egger, the second two are of the blue egger.

I’ll also repost in a few weeks when they are older. Just anxious to know if I have to figure out what to do with a rooster (I’m in the city so keeping it is not an option).

Thanks!
Liz

Still a bit too young. Out of curiosity, I went back to look at our EE pics when they were 3-4 weeks old - last year. It turns out that one was an accidental male, which we removed from the flock. Knowing now that one was a male, I wondered if I could tell when they were 3-4 weeks old, and No, it was not obvious. But by 8 weeks it was obvious. The second set of pics are good, so do that again in a few weeks - under regular light, standing and from the side.

Will do!
