So I would like to ask a question about some Ameraucana/EE that I have just recently purchased. First I want to say they were sold to me as Ameraucanas and if they are really EE's I don't care to be honest, so please lets not get into that argument here!

My main concern is sexing of the juveniles, because I have very limited experience doing so!

Now they were both sold to me as pullets and are between 8 and 9 weeks of age. I am concerned one of them may actually be a cockerel, which is fine, I will keep it if it is, just will need a name change lol!

Here are the best pictures that I could get of the two. Keep in mind NEITHER crow, and are not aggressive. Reason why I am questioning sex is color of comb, but all other signs from my research tell me pullet. However like I said I am not an expert so other opinions are greatly appreciated!

This is "Clara" the one I am concerned about.

I really appreciate your help! And I look forward to hearing what you all think!

Welcome to BYC!

It is hard to tell with EEs/Ameraucanas, but my guess would be her comb is turning red because she is getting ready to lay.

Here's a picture of my Ameraucana, Eagle

The only reason I would say your chicken looks like a rooster is because it just has the proud stance of one.

Best of luck! They're very pretty by the way.

Thanks @GitaBooks ! They are beautiful and I love them both to bits! I am definitely hoping it is a she

! but I guess only time will tell lol! Just wanted to get others opinions, because the more I think about it the more I get confused!

I have a mixed flock, the other three I have are Leghorn Hybrids (I think with orphington in them), However really like the Ameraucana's and EE's and am looking to build my flock with them as well!

Sorry, I forgot to mention, Eagle is a girl. Sometimes she looks slimmer than this, she was just showing off today by fluffing up her feathers.

I really don't think either of those birds are close to laying age at 8-9 weeks old :) Claras feathering is sort of pullety, but for some reason it seems like its kind of not too, if that makes any sense. It just seems roosterish to me. How many rows of peas are on Claras comb? I'm going to guess that Clara is eventually going to leak red in "her" wings and shoulders and turn into a handsome rooster.

But I'm going to :fl that she ends up giving you lovely green or blue eggs.
Some help I am, huh?

@howfunkyisurchicken I agree, pulletish, but also roosterish! "she" is VERY confusing! from what I can tell and of course obviously NOT an expert, I only see on row on the comb, but could be very wrong too. the saddle feathers seem to go straight down the back and not the sides, however the tail looks like it could be roosterish, but at the same time too messed up to tell. Her tail came to me like that so I am assuming there were pecking order issues prior to my purchase of "her".

Both are pullets. A rooster will be patchy and not have a defined pattern like the one. The other is solid blue with a small pea comb and smaller. It's better to know than be mislead, but the blue one may be a true Amer and the silver one is an EE.

GitaBrooks, yours is actually EE not ameraucana.

Thanks @PoultryQueen101! That is what I was hoping to hear! And how do you tell the difference between EE and Ameraucanas? The silver one has blue legs like the blue one. I am just curious... I had been reading on the Ameraucana website that they have a silver color. Just not sure of the difference lol thanks everyone sooo much for the help!!

Ameraucana only come in eight standard colors. They must have slate colored legs, a pea comb, muffs, a beard, breed true at least 50% of the time, and lay blue eggs. As well as be clean legged and have four toes. EE are just mutts that can be a combination of any features. From clean faced to single combed to yellow legged. They can lay any egg in the rainbow. From blue to pink to green.

Go to ameraucana.org in the FAQ section. I dont have the link on this device but can add it when I get home.
