Just obtained three gorgeous little Ancona babies today. Is there a way, other than vent sexing (these guys are tiny and I'm not super confident with the itty bitties) that I can determine hen from drake? Or am I stuck waiting until someone squeaks and someone quacks?

I believe with Anconas you can sec them when they first hatch by color or so I thought I read that. I am unsure but definitely following!! We want to add Anconas to our flock

AFAIK the only sex linked color is chocolate. Otherwise listen for the raspy voices and wait for drake curls.

The second most common color which is recessive to black. This color is sex-linked. Meaning if you mate:

Chocolate Drake X Black duck : 50% Black (all males carrying Chocolate); 50% Chocolate (all females)

Black Drake X Chocolate duck: 100% Black - but only males will carry the Chocolate gene

Note the example lists chocolate -drake-, so brown isn't guaranteed female.
