Good morning all. I have one BC Maran hen that was an oops hatch from bought eggs so I decided to get more :) I am new to BC Maran chicks and I have 14 that are 6-8 weeks old that I am trying to determine gender. From what I know from other breeds I've had, I either have mostly roos or I'm not looking for the right characteristic to tell the difference :) Can someone with BC Marans please tell me what to look for to determine sex? All combs appear about the same, none are more passive than others (but then the 1 BC maran hen I have is a space-case), a few have more copper flecking than others....

Thanks!
Val

MY BC roo was very different from his pullet hatchmates - and very quickly! Here he is at 4 weeks with one of the pullets:

I've also read - on the very long Marans thread somewhere - that the males have lighter feet than the females.

The comb, really, is your ticket. The cockerels will have very pink, large combs quite early on. The pullets will have smaller, but still noticeable yellow or black combs for months.

You can sex them by comb at about 3 weeks of age.

OK i went out and looked... I have one that looks like your cockerel with comb and waddles visable and 2 others that have slightly more comb than the "girls" but no waddles yet so I will have to watch them for a week and see.
Thanks for the help! I feel better knowing I didn't end up buyng 12 out of 14 roos :) been there done that!

The ones that have more comb can be girls. I had one obvious cockeral, one obvious girl with practically no comb, and one with a larger comb (but no wattles and not pink comb) and it turned out to be another pullet.
