I was just wondering what age you could start sexing button quail? I have 6 which are currently just 4 weeks. I've tried vent sexing them with the guide on this forum but they all looked the same to me and I couldnt decide if they were hens or cocks. Is it too early to tell? thanks

I think vent sexing is pretty hard to do. They might be too old? I think it is harder to do on birds past a few days old, something about being able to control what comes out if you know what I mean. I'm still waiting to hatch some chicks to practice this on but I'm prepared not to be able to do it, since most people seem not to be able to.
I guess just wait till they start crowing or laying eggs in a few weeks

Yeh it looks like I am just going to have to wait. When I was trying to vent sex them they all looked the same sex to me and now one has rusty coloured feathers developing around its vent area which I think means its a male from what I've read. I will just have to wait and see what happens but if they are all male then I will be waiting a very long time for any eggs! Typical! lol

The red feathers and bib generally indicate a male but this is not a sure fire indicator. the best thing is to wait a couple more weeks for the adult feathering/colors to show. These chicks in your photos look about 5 weeks old as they still have chick feathers on the head ,which is the last place to get adult feathers. so be a bit patient it will be easier in a couple more weeks.
