I've been trying to see if I could for sure see any sort of bumps in the vents of any of my chickens. But where exactly is this bump supposed to be? Dorsal, towards the spine, or ventral, towards the feet? I'd like to learn as much as I can about this so I can gain at least some level of skill in it.

It would make sense if it were towards the spine... but I wait till they are old enough to either crow or lay an egg.

You can only vent-sex day old chicks. And, really, pros (who have had proper training), are the only people that can do it correctly. Even then, they have a 10% chance of being wrong.

Oh really? I didn't realize that once they are older vent sexing couldn't be done. Well, never mind that then.

Well, I say the next time you have day old chicks or a hatch, try vent sexing them, put bands on the ones you think are boys and see how right or wrong you agree.... I'm a firm believe in being able to learn new skills, even if you have to teach yourself...
