I have two Amerucana/RIR chicks, that hatched on January 8 and 9. I feather sexed them, and they were both hens. One of them, Sam-I-Am, has a little red comb, while Dani does not. This makes me think that one of them is a roo.

Don’t you hate it when they sneak in those sex change operations. At that age they are still minors. They should have had you sign for it!

If you could post photos we might be able to help. But feather sexing only works when both parents are set up right genetically, the hen with the slow feathering gene and the father with the fast feathering gene. Otherwise its 50-50.

Feather sexing only works for certain breeds and crosses. If it worked for all chickens hatcheries wouldn't need vent sexers or sex linked breeds.

If it has a red comb at 8 weeks it is more than likely a rooster. A female should be showing very little comb, if any, and it shouldn't be red.
