sexing chicks using a magnet

Necro-post!

We decided to test this out for my daughter's 6th grade science project. We tested it on a large litter of kittens without any prior knowledge of their gender. I did the pendulum, wrote down how I read it, then passed the kitten to my husband to confirm or refute my "readings" by the old fashioned method of checking under their tails. The pendulum was right about 80% of the time, and I had no way of influencing the results with prior knowledge. It's one more trick in my toolbox to try when it comes to sexing poultry, useful if you've got a breed that doesnt feather sex well like my Icelandics. I took it to another house to help my daughter pick out an orpington trio of chicks. BAM. 2 henlets, 1 roo is what we got when they feathered out.
