So, recently we tried hatching some chicks. This was our first time and only two hatched, but I realize the mistakes I made. Anyways, originally we thought the two chicks that hatched were hens, but now I'm not so sure. One of the chicks is bigger than the other, a lot bigger. I'm not sure if it's due to the fact that it's three days old, it's momma is a bigger hen, or that it could possibly be a rooster. The bigger chicks momma is a barred rock and the smaller chicks momma is a Rhode Island Red. They both have the same daddy. Anyways, if this chick does turn out to be a rooster, then I can't keep it. Does anyone know how I can tell? Btw the possible rooster turns threes weeks old tomorrow. Also, would it help if I posted pictures of the chicks so maybe you guys could tell? Thanks.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

It would be very helpful if you post pics. Then we can help determine gender. But, you also must understand that chicks can't be successfully sexed until they are around 10-15 weeks.

But, you can post pics here anyways.

Thanks. I understand that you can't fully sex chicks until later, but I had heard there was some things to look for in younger chicks that could sometimes give you an idea.

Here are some pictures of the chicks. The chick with the white on the top of its head is the possible rooster, I posted a pic of the other chick as a comparison

I'm not 100% sure of what I am looking at, some of pictures are quite blurred. The first photo may be a possible cockerel, he is already starting to grow wattles. But at 3 weeks of age this is speculation. At 6-8 weeks you could post photos at 'what breed or gender is this." What breed is the father?
