My aunt is bringing me a few Rhode Island Reds from TSC to go with my 5 Barred Rock Hens we brought home yesterday from our little mom and pop feed store in town. I told her that was fine just make sure she got Pullets... long story short she turned them upside down and the ones whose heads fell back she says are hens and the ones who hold their head down are roosters... have any of you heard this? I'm thinking it's not an exact science - how do they sex them in the hatchery?

My other question is is it okay to put them all together? I have room in the brooder and they would all be about the same age... any thoughts on that?

That video is the vent sexing episode right? Gross.

I just got a couple bantams at TSC this evening. I wanted more, they're SO stinking cute! But the guy at the store said that all the bantams were roos. I said I didn't think anyone (many hatcheries anyway) sexed bantams. He told us the "hold the chick upside down" method. I didn't buy it, DH did, he's not keen on the idea of roos. I doubt there will be more of these adorable feather-footed fluff butts tomorrow.
