I purchased 5 BR chicks and 3 silkies form a local small farmer. Can anyone tell me how soon these can be sexed? I got them at 1 week and now they are 4 weeks old.

I think at about 4 weeks you should be able to start telling the cockerels from the pullets by the size of their combs.

Sometimes it takes up to 3-4 months to tell the gender of silkies. They like to hide their genders!

If you post pictures on BYC in the What Gender Is This? section, you will get some accurate guesses.

Barred Rocks
Cockerel, lighter overall color (white bars wider), headspot at less than a week is large and splotchy

Pullet, blacker overall color, headspot smaller and/or more defined edges, fronts of legs darker than on cockerel.

Take all these factors together, not one or the other to help sex BRs. Post a pic and we can help you out with those.

Silkies, you're on your own with those, LOL. Dont do Silkies.
