Sexing Salmon Favorelle Chicks!

I had both bantam and large fowl Salmon Faverolles. All of my males were very sweet. They were good with hens and with people. They were also great fathers when the hens were broody. I did have one of my lf boys go after a small hawk when there were chicks on the ground. That was the only aggression displayed though, and I believe that was obviously him protecting the babies.

I always recommend allowing a cockerel to grow up with the rooster and older ladies before he even starts crowing. With my English Orps that's usually between four and five months. To date I've not had issues doing that with them or any of the breeds I used to keep. Sometimes much later down the road there is an issue, but for the most part things have always worked out. I would keep an eye on them of course and always have a back up plan. Don't interpret normal behavior as something to worry about though. It's normal for the older rooster to assert his dominance. But also remember that sometimes it just doesn't work out.
