Sexing the Australorp. Mystery or Myth?

Your second Aussie is :gig:lau if you even hinted you believed that.

If you order from Meyer, they will refund you for male chicks you receive.
Though you still have to figure out what to do with the unwanted cockerel.

I got 2 BAs from Ideal in 2012 and 2 more from Meyer in 2015. All were pullets so the suggestion that they can't be sexed is wrong. Got 2 Barnevelders from Meyer in 2017, 1 turned out to be a cockerel. Side by side comparison helped I'm sure but I was 110% sure he was male at 3 weeks. Had to wait until he was 11 weeks to claim my refund. But they were quick to do so when I sent a picture of the 2 birds together at 11 weeks.

Here they are at 4 weeks. Guess which one is the cockerel.

Very interesting. If I were guessing on the first two pics, I would say the first is the cockerel and the second is the pullet. Very good and informative photos. The sunbathing picture still has me looking for testicals.

Look all you like but it will be futile ;). You need look no farther than the comb on each bird in that picture.

What gave it away? The slow feathering? The reddening comb? The telephone pole legs? The pullet did have a whole 3 more minutes of maturing time after I took the picture of the cockerel :p

Those tall legs.........and the testicals.

The black lorps throw me because its hard to see sickle and saddle feathers on a black chicken, hard to see feather shape, and they are a big chicken with big legs, and because the beetle green sheen looks rooster-y to me. Luckily mine was a girl! Next time Ill check for testicles tho! :plbb
My black australorp with my croad langshan roo, both at 7 months old.

The one on OUR right looks to be sprouting a comb so may be a cockerel. Of course my two 2012 BA girls matured at a different rate and I was SURE one MUST be a cockerel, but she wasn't. She got BIG though, bigger than your 'average' BA hen.

I'd watch the comb on that one, also the wattles and see if they get noticeably bigger and redder.
