My favorite "breed" is Sex-Links! They're AWESOME layers, docile, and very pretty. I've so far had Red Sex-Links from McMurray and Cackle, and I've also hatched 15 Buff Orpington x Barred Rock Sex-Links for myself. Next spring I'll be hatching some Rhode Island Red x Barred Rock. And in Spring 2012 I hope to be hatching some Rhode Island Red x Rhode Island Whites.

Here's a couple photos of my Buff Orpington x Barred Rock pullets at three months old.

Honestly, I don't really know. Ideal is the only one I know of who carries a "gold sex-link." I've seen pictures of these from fellow BYCers, and they look just like my "Red Stars" from McMurray, and my "Cinnamon Queens" from Cackle (red/orange with a white undercolor). Ideal's "Red Sex-Links" have the same coloring as a RIR. It has me really confused.

I do really like how Ideal says what cross makes each of their Sex-Links though.

Your girls got more Buff than mine did, but I sold them close to when those last pics were taken so I dont know if they got more later.

I got my RIW hens from Privett hatchery, the birds are OK but they have terrible customer service. Dont bother with emailing them, you wont get a responce, if you call, their workers are snotty people and even if you reguest a price list over the phone like I did, you may not get it either. And I dont think their website is up anymore, so personally I dont recommend them, but they are the one of the very few places I found that have them.

And thanks, I love my SS roo too, its hard to get that size in Speckled Sussex.

I have 21 red sexlink hens, so adorable and funny, I got pics on my page I don't know how to post them on here, but you can see a funny one on my avatar.

Question...can anyone tell me what colour a red sex roo is? does it look different than the hens?

Theres really no definite way to pin down what exact cross produces these certain brand names ( Red Star, Red Sexlink, Golden Sexlink, Golden Comet, Cinnamon Queens ect.) Like Ideal says that one of theirs is from a RIR roo on White Rock hens, and this causes confusion becuase these have to be a certain strain of white rocks hens that have the Silver genes, most white rocks dont have the silver genes, but with them saying that, people think they can just buy any white rock and get sexlinks from it. But is is best to stay away from Recessive white breeds ( Rocks, Wyandottes, Javas, Giants, Cochins, etc) when making sexlinks becuase you never know what they are masking and if they are masking a silver color.)

When I think of a Red Sexlink hen, I think of a hen that is red with black tail feathers, like you would get from using a Delaware, Light Sussex, and any hen with Silver in the name. And when I think of a Gold sexlink hen, I think of a hen that is red with white tails like mine, and the white comes from a breed that is Dominant white and will replace with white, what would normally be black. So basicly a RIW hen is about the only breed that I know of that has Dominant white and Silver genes, and so I think a RIW is the only breed that can produce those colored hens.

White leghorns are Dominant White but generally dont have the silver genes, but there is probably a few strains that do carry silver and will produce sexlinks, but if they dont, then all of their offspring will be white with black dots.

But like I said, its hard to say what difference there is between red and gold sexlinks becuase hatcheries call them by so many different names.

Welp carries them too and they have great service and you can order from the website without any problems

Yep, I'm pretty sure Welp dropships from Privett though, but it may be better to pay a little more to get them from Welp if you can get good service, I've never ordered from Welp.
