sexting chicks

So i was watching the show critter fixers vets. He was sexting chicks by the wings. I dont know if it works with every breed but its worth doing. Wish i knew this when picking chicks..
So he said....if the feathers are straight across and even it will be a rooster. If the feathers are not even: short, long, short, long..it will be a hen.
Let me know if you use this method, and if you have found it to work.

This was true for my Australorps that were sourced from Jenks Hatchery. They had done vent sexing, and I was supposed to get two females, but it was apparent from their wing feathers and general feathering out development that they were different. And it turned out to be true, both fine examples of the breed but one was a cockerel and one was a female.

It needs to be the cross of a fast feathering male and a slow feathering female. Unless that foundation is set, wings tell you nothing.

Feathering rate has to do with genetics.

It doesn't work on most "breeds". It needs to be a specific cross, not just a random chick you find at the feed store. The best way I can put it is that it would be no use to most people, unless you breed for that specific trait. So anyhow, just wait until the birds are 6-9 weeks old (for the average bird, this is the perfect time for gender and breed identification).
