I hope this is the right forum.

Anyone fish for shad? I live a little east of Portland, Oregon and the shad fishing is coming to a tail end. Lot of times I encounter fishermen who seem to be anti-social and even risky. I like to talk to my fellow fishermen, mainly because I'm awful at it. Well my local paper reports fish counts near this dam on the Colombia River. I went up there twice, I caught 5 shad one day and 0 the other day. The fish counter is still positive. I fish for shad for two reasons: 1) Great sport fish, fun, tough. 2) Great bait for halibut fishing and crab traps.

I've eaten shad a few times. Too much trouble for what it's worth. Most my fellow fishermen are Asians and we get along great.. they have all told me recipes to make them a good meal. I must just not get it or culturally different but I'm not a fan. But the fishing is a lot of fun and the fish are not wasted. I was busy this year and only got to go a few times. It's a great experience for teaching your kids how to fish, it's how my dad taught me to catch salmon(still awful at it). Only ever caught one(on the river bank). good luck, all.
