In February, my bantams arrived day-old. By late May, first eggs were being laid. Now, 24 hens + 3 roos, good coop, and up to 12 eggs a day.

Problem: For the past 2 weeks or so, when I approach the nest boxes, it seems that EVERYONE laying (3-5 at a time usually) becomes possessed, puffing up and 'growling'. What is going on???? Broody? Territorial? What??!!!!!???? I do have one confirmed broody hen trying to hatch 4 fertilized eggs but in a different area of the enclosed run. The rest of the flock comes running to me for treats, etc., like they always have while free ranging. They have been treated like little princesses. Is it possible that one hen's bad manners have influenced the rest, or is this considered normal behavior? Whatever the case, it is really frustrating and concerning to me. Ideas? Thanks ahead of time for your input!

They are defending their nests, even if they are not broody. I taught mine that the are required to give up eggs by pulling them off the nest or thumping them in the chest and getting the eggs when they stood up. My RIR went broody and pecked at hands whenever you went to get eggs so we played chuck a chickie. She couldn't decide which hand to bite if you put both around her at once and then all you have to do is pull her out and put her on the ground.

My girl did this to me yesterday as I as cleaning the coop! I could not help but laugh at her shes so "scary" :)

Popcorn,

Couldn't resist asking, is your profile pic a random one, or is there a story behind it? Did you take it?
