No one has mentioned "dubbing" as it pertains to showing. I'd never heard the term before and had to look it up. The young teen doing it (youtube) said it had to be done in order to show. My first thought was how barbaric, and the second was what a stupid and evil rule. Was the kid right? Has anyone else ever heard of this horrible practice?

Yes but that isn't part of the idea of Bathing a chicken. I belive Dubbing Started out in cold climates where the comb was threatened by frost bite. ITs also part of something we cant name here...

There are few breeds that the combs are dubbed to show, if any. perchie.girl is correct about it being done by some, normally on large single cones, to help prevent frostbite, and comb damage from the cold.

When my kids were in 4H they had us using Woolite. It got the white chickens all white when their belly feathers were yellowish. Also try a free and clear livestock shampoo. I use Clear Choice. It does not remove the natural oils from the feathers.

Thank you, and Susan Dye, I can actually see the logic in doing this to protect from frostbite.

From what I read about dubbing, I don't get the impression that it started as a cold weather preventive measure. Frost bite does damage the tips of the combs. The tips eventually fall off as the comb heals. I'm not able to compare the pain between the two. I prefer to let nature's way.
