There are wild ones that live on the local pond. It was lovely to see the duckling’s earlier this summer.

My husband and I were talking last night. We knew we would enjoy our ducks when we got them. We love animals. But, we didn't know we would enjoy them as much as we have.

There's nothing like being met at the door when going outside by a stampeding flock of ducks that seem genuinely happy to see you, and then, talk to you the whole way to the "treat station" like a giddy pre-schooler.

Yesterday, I unplugged and sat in the backyard on my new chair my husband got for me. It reclines into a chaise-type lounger. I had a book with me and laid back and read. Our runner, Duckter J, kept coming back to look at me every few minutes. He would do that adorable side-cocked look, as if trying to figure out if what I was doing was "okay". He's never seen me lay down, so I am sure it was a sight. After looking at me for a couple of seconds, he would do his raspy "wah-wah" sounds and go off to be with the others, only to return a few minutes later and do the whole thing over again.

I have two stories!

Today, it was pouring down rain. Our ducks have decided to create their own pond in our backyard. There WAS a slight depression in the yard where water gathers occasionally when I water. Now, it is a larger mudhole. They root around in it, only making it bigger, and there isn't a darn thing we can do about it since it won't really stop raining here at the moment. They splash around in it, root around in it, eat it, sit in it and try to float (it only comes to their knees). Needless to say, I think they are rather proud of themselves. They go play in it, then come running to me under our umbrella to tell me about it. I don't have the heart to tell them that this isn't good at all.

So, our ducks are about at that age where they are experimenting with their wings. Confetti, our Muscovy female, and Sunshine, our Rouen female, have gotten some air lately. Duckter J, our runner, is trying hard. While it was raining today, I saw the usual dance of the wings with the ducks out of the corner of my eye while feeding Cupcake, the Muscovy drake, his lettuce. All of a sudden, Confetti launches herself into the air, flies around a tree, along the east fence, and around to our back porch. All in all, a flight of about 50ish feet at the altitude of 4 feet. And yes, this was impressive, but her buddies were so excited about it that they followed her, flapping their wings and when she landed, they met her, flapped their wings and talked loudly. They celebrated with her and were just so proud! They seem to congratulate each other on any feat of flying, and today Confetti got a party!

I love duck.

I have Calls. A Mother Mallard and 8 Ducklings came into my yard and my Dogs, Cat and Ducks all tried attacking her. I caught the Ducklings and put into my Brooder till I could control my animals. Momma Mallard flew around my property calling her Ducklings. I set them free and I believe Momma took them to the pond behind my property. She was confused I think and brought them to my yard because she heard Ducks quacking..?
