I’m sure I’m not the only one groaning about all the wasted feed from chicks kicking it out from those common plastic chick feeders you find at the feed store. I’m looking for ideas to either modify those ones or make a new one.

I look forward to seeing all the different feeders!

Chicks are messy, but part of the problem is the fact that they need crumble. There will be a lot less waste once they can switch to pellets. One option is to feed them wet feed. Just mix water into feed until somewhere between oatmeal and batter like consistency. They can't spill that! They only need those chick feeders for a couple of months, but they certainly can be very messy.

For our adults we have been surprised that this one seems to work pretty well, and not much feed waste using pellets:

We only fill with a days worth of feed, and they usually leave a little bit behind. We take it inside for the night.

Add water to their feed and make a mash. Then serve it in little bowls that increase in size as the chicks grow. This is what I do. They really do not waste it.

Otherwise if you want to feed dry, and have a hanging feeder, hang it up high enuf that they have to stand on their tippy toes to reach it.
