Shaving in food

how do we stop the chicks from getting so much shavings in their food? the get so much they stop eating out of the whiles with the shavings. we have one of the little ufo lookin feeders. in the pic i had already picked up most of their shavings out of it

I find raising it on a block of wood helps. Or just cleaning it out frequently.

Putting something under it helps. Rule of thumb is the food should be at shoulder level. Then they won’t climb on it and poop on it as much. Also they won’t kick as much bedding into it. But as long as the food isn’t covered you’ll be fine.
