Shavings kicked in water

My indoor waterer sits on a wooden platform about 8" tall and stays pretty clean. I have a brick on one side for the banties.

I had my waterer elevated and it stayed pretty clean but sometimes the birds would jump up and perch on it to drink. Then they could either knock it over or get poop in it. It's an OK option but I switched to nipples and I like it much better. It also sounds like your coop is small and this would take up much less space inside because the water bucket is outside the coop and then there is just the pipe that runs in. Click here to see what I am talking about.

It's not expensive to set up. Click here to see where I ordered the nipples from. Then you just need a big bucket and some PVC pipe which you could probably get for free on craigslist if you don't already have it lying around.

My chickens learned how to use them pretty quick. Once one learns then they all learn. They are like Children of the Dammned. I did help them to learn by sticking little treats on the nipples. I used pita bread but you could use anything that will stay stuck someone else said cherry tomatoes work well.

If you use a regular fount for watering your chickens, then the water is going to get dirty. It'll be a bit cleaner the higher the water is, but somehow, poop and shavings always end up in there. I've had chickens for seven years, and no matter what I try, a lot of water is dirtied and wasted

I've bought my chicken nipples and will be installing a first-trial nipple watering system as soon as the weather supports not freezing the water. Once I'm confident I have all the basic mechanics down, we'll design a nipple watering system (with a small water heater for winter use) for the new chicken coop, to be built this summer.

I have HAD IT with founts.
