If I decide to go with shavings on the coop floor, about how much will I need to cover a floor that will be approximately 6'x8'? I know, it depends on a lot of factors, but a ballpark idea?

One standard feedstore bale (the compressed ones) will do it, and depending on how much depth of bedding you want you may have some left over.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Thanks, Pat. I looked at some this past weekend, but they didn't have coverage details at all, so I wasn't sure.

BTW, your ventilation and cold weather pages were of great help in our coop design!

I use 1 compressed bail for my 4x8 coop. 2" thick takes about 1/3 of the bail. then I just keep adding as it gets dirty till about 6" and clean it out. I think that will finish off the first bail and start the second one.

My coop is also 6x8 - I usually use 1.5 bales (with 4 chickens), but I tend to keep my litter pretty deep. It fluffs up quite a lot after it's out of the bag. I add the remaining 1/2 bag over the course of a couple months if necessary and clean out every 6 months.

I have an 8'x8' coop, and I free range. I just shovel all the old litter out and dump 1 bale on the floor. I don't even stir it around, the chickens seem to enjoy spreading it about. Next morning there is always a nice even layer on the floor.
I could use more, but that completely covers the floor and leaves room for me to dump another bale on there later when necessary.
