Oh. . and I checked Maggies eggs the other day and all 5 were viable and looked healthy so I may get a couple girls from that batch. The offspring would be Ralphies kids. . but only half siblings to my other 2 drakes. And half grand children to duck drake . . so I *think* those would All be ok combinations to have for breeding.
If anyone can tell me otherwise please enlighten me?

Oh no! Most shepards I've known wouldn't miss a shot at a coon. Even my grandma's female killed them all the time.

The new guy should keep them away from my land. Hopefully. Little growing up to do first.

He’s ten years old, so he won’t move unless made to. He nearly go ran over by a hay wagon recently because he refused to get out of the way. Poor old man

Well. . I hear calls are better about pairing up than other breeds. My duck and Jane have always just had each other as long as I've known them and I've never seen breeding damage on her. But who knows what it was like in previous years when they were younger before I got them.

Yeah my calls stuck in pairs. Jemima and Jasper, and Gilbert and Daphne.
But now with them gone Jemima is very depressed and hardly talks. She won’t go swimming and feels like a duckling babysitter. Poor little girl misses her friends!
My chickens could care less if a flock mate is gone, but ducks are attached to each other, and the mourning is obvious!

Since Z is gone I'm going to work on integrating duck and Jane into the flock. I moved them to a pen beside the palace so they can all start seeing each other. All the palace ducks lined up against the fence to check them out it was hilarious! I said look. . Even the ducks like to watch duck tv.
So if I add them to the flock that gives me 4 drakes and 6 ducks.
Still a bit off but maybe this gimpy duck will be a girl. I think my palace would hold 12 easily. . and we plan to bed to the back side too so I'll have the option to separate flocks if need be. I'm just tired of having to feed and water in so many different places.

I would love to see a picture of your palace!!!! My duck coop fits 7 calls, which I DID have before serial killer coon murdered them. I GOT more calls because I only had four, two going drakes, and now I’m back to 4!!! The cruel irony is not lost on me here

I'm so sad for you, there's something about ducks for sure.

I'm worried every night, recently watched 5 racoons pop across the street right into my yard. Saw possum and even a Fisher in the driveway. My anti dig skirts are exposed somewhere most mornings these days. I fear for my chickens the most, water birds are locked in a barn stall at night.

Here's my big uncall like duck, getting dressed up as a boy. Pretty colored thing.

And here's Rose, I didn't know she'd get a white neck ring.

No, but for now I can't let them out of there to play we need to build a fence first. So I don't wanna over crowd them since that's all they have.
My plan is for the addition to the back to be a maternity ward where I can block access to the front side and let moms raise babies out back
Then during the off season they can have the whole thing. Or if I need to go somewhere for a few days I can put the Cayuga ducks in the back and shut the door to the palace so they would be safe out there and have room to move while I'm gone.

Don't you hate having to keep them contained? I know I do, and same thing, when I'm away somewhere they don't get out. I pretty much have to sit there with them while they graze right now.
