That's probably because they've never had real fruitcake, just that poop they sell in the grocery store.
A well made fruitcake, soaked in some good booze, is actually quite tasty!

Mincemeat- a mixture of currants, raisins, sugar, apples, candied citrus peel, spices, and suet, typically baked in a pie.

I always thought it was some kind of savory meat pie.

My grandma put meat in it.
It all depends on who makes it.

The smell is absolutely divine.
I could go for a mincemeat scented candle

Nope.
There are about 100,000 different recipes for mincemeat.
I found that out when I tried to make one for my grandpa a few years ago. That was his Christmas wish that year.
There was no way in the world I could replicate my grandmother's minced meat pie having no idea what all she actually put in it.
Every time I was at her house while she was making one she would always tell me that I liked it the last time..and it did smell wonderful so I'd give in and try it. Horrible. Every. Time.

I ended up buying a jar of mince meat from the store. It smelled so great, and I knew it didn't actually have meat in it like Grandma's did so I foolishly made the mistake of trying it one last time.
Never again.

I have my paternal grandmother's recipe for green tomato mincemeat. The only time I ever made a mincemeat pie, I used a store bought box of dried ingredients that you had to let absorb the water. It was okay but nothing like what my grandmother used to make.
