Hi-I am not sure which thread to post this question. :) I don't have a duck question, but it relates as an abandoned nest. :) I had my first incubator hatch a couple of months ago and all but one made it!! I have 15 bouncing baby chicks. :) They are not so little anymore! Anyway, back to my question. My dad found abandoned eggs from a hen (who was sadly killed.) He knew I had an incubator so he brought them to me hoping I could save them. The problems are: 1. He doesn't know long they were left uncovered for sure (several hours or a day). The nights are really chilly for hatching at 60 degrees. 2. A couple of the eggs are cracked. I have put them in the incubator and am candling them. They LOOK (to my untrained eye) to be around 13 - 15 days. First: should I assume 15 days when putting them in lock down rather than 13 days to make sure I don't have them in the turner when they might be hatching? Second, I read from someone on this forum say that I can tape the eggs that are cracked. So that is what I have done. Third, I am telling my heart that there is no way they could have survived being that cold for possibly that long so that my heart doesn't break if they don't make it. Should I continue to assume that they have died or do you think there is hope that they might have made it. Fourth, when looking for movement - I haven't really noticed any other than the cracked eggs - when I rotate them the movement looks kind of like jello, floating-like movements. Is this a dead chickie? Or actual movement?
