I never started out thinking of my chickens as pets. One of my chickens had an ingrown feather issue and I had to catch her several times over a period of a few weeks to lance the ingrown feathers. She got used to sitting in my lap, and began associating me with pain relief. So now she follows me everywhere I go in the back yard. She flies up to my lap when I'm sitting and reading, and she has basically ingratiated herself quite thoroughly.

Today, I was walking to the liquor store to buy some beer. I don't know how she did it, but she got out of the fence and began following me. I tossed her back in the yard, and began walking again, and there she was again. I didn't have time to find where she was getting out of, and if I let her follow me, she'd probably get run over. So I picked her up.
I took my chicken to the liquor store with me. She was happy as a clam and bawking contentedly the whole time. I got to the door and opened it, and stuck my head in, and said "I have a chicken with me, can I still come in and buy some beer?" The ladies behind the counter laughed and said yes. So I walked in, and one lady said "Wow, you really do have a chicken!" I bought my beer, and my chicken got some neck scratches. I had my photo taken, I have a feeling it's going to be on the wall next time I go.

I think I've crossed the line into crazy chicken lady.

My bantams are so friendly I have problems keeping them from following people home. Had one hen disappear for three days before a lady knocked on my door with her and three eggs. Said she followed her teenage son home when he walked by in the alley. They had no idea what she was lol. I think the only reason they brought her back was because they were keeping her in the bath tub and and her cat and dog, who normally hated eachother, had banded together to try and get at her. Everyone loves my my girls

Mine run from everybody else.
The other day they got into my neighbors yard, and he tried to catch them to toss them back over the fence. He couldn't catch them. He didn't really mind them in his yard, but he let me know they were there the next time I was outside.
So I walked over there, called them, and lead them back to my yard. He stood there boggling that they just lined up behind me! I really wish I could find where they are getting out. There isn't a hole in the fence anywhere I can see, and they've never flown up that high that I've ever seen.

I can see how having your chooks wander off with random strangers might be nerve wracking!
