Is American Bulldogs and American Pit Bulls two different breeds? I don't know much about either breed and am just curious. These look different from the pit bulldogs you see around here, so I'm thinking they are different breeds, but at the same time they look similar.

Do these make good dogs to have around stock. I use my dogs to keep deer out of the goat pen, foxes away from the chickens and rabbits out of the garden. My dogs are mutts and do a fine job, but I'm really taken with that blue eyed puppy. We aren't in the market now, but its something to think about for the future when the dogs I have are too old to do their jobs.

I really, really like that puppy!

AB and Pits are two different breeds. Our male is a wonderful dog, the only problem with american bulldogs is they want to play and they play just like a bull would play, lol. If you raise them with the livestock and teach them that they are not food then they would make great guard dogs. I had a 10 week old bantam cochin get out one time and when we went out there the bulldog hadn't touched the baby. We had never taught him that chickens weren't food and he still didn't get her. Do you have kids? If so you'll have to train them not to bull doze your kids, lol. I think our male is about 110lbs- 115lbs and his dad is 125lbs with a 28inch neck.

They are wonderful wonderful dogs and I would recommend them. I'll get a better pic of Emmitt later today.



P.S. Be sure to have a "wipe your face" towel if you get one because there is alot of drool with a bulldog, lol.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to look into the breed for sure. I know a neighboring farm has a well trained pit bull that he uses as a cow dog. He takes it all over the state to catch people's escaped cows and its great to watch him work. He puts one of those teflar?? vests on him when he works with bulls. I've always liked the dogs, but they have such a reputation I hate to have one on our place, even though I know the breed can be great. Alot of parent's would be iffy about letting their kids be around them.


Most folks here use Catahoulas as hog dogs, but now that you mention it it seems like a friend of my dh's did mention having a bull dog. Maybe thats another angle I could use to get dh to say yes....

As others have mentioned the AmBull and a pit bull are very different but often confused usually in the "that is a pit isn't it" "No it is an American Bulldog" I don't think I have ever had it go the other way in the ten years that I have been breeding them.

They work with cows well but it is based more on a heel nipping than it is a herding like a lot of cow dogs are trained but you could very wel train these to be the other way.

They are somwhat hard headed but they are equally the same amount in a lover. I don't have a large amount of problem with the drool from mine. The biggest problem that I have it that they INSIST that they are lap dogs. Fat buggers!

It is a kevlar (bullet proof) vest that the dog wears. Same concept as a bull rider or cop for that matter. Saves from a chest crushing kick and also disperses the force of getting kicked so it is not a heart stopper.

To me there has never been an issue of letting an child around mine. They are very protective animals of things that they are bigger than so kids and them fit well. For that matter mine used to do a very good job, when my kids were younger, keeping them coralled in the open yard.

And Peeps, they are not good bulldozers they just have bad breaks for their size!

Man they're cute..AB's aer one of the best dogs...I adore them...and Boxers and Bulldogs..anything with a squish face.
