We got 4 baby chicks in august. Last week the neighbors dog got out and killed 3. The surviving one was pretty badly injured It has been 1 week since she was attacked. She is healing well (better than I expected) and is currently living in our small shower so she will stay warm (we are in Nebraska) and her wounds stay clean. I am just worried about her being the only survivor. We are possibly planing on getting more chicks in the spring but just not sure if she will be ok that long without other company. She has plenty of interaction with our family, the boys love to check on her and help with cleaning her wounds and taking care of her but is that going to be enough until we can get her new chicken friends?

... They are flock animals but I have a special one that has a coop of her own.

After I picked up the young I have had hens who have lived on farm walks for 2 years without any company and this hen never seemed to be psychology impaired by her haring ordeal.

I've read chickens are social creatures but have had two incidents where I did raise single hatches & they were fine and did get alot of attention from me. Each played chase with my dog (Chi), that was so funny and they shared a bed in the patio. So as long as the single gets interaction from someone/thing, it should be fine & spoiled :p

Will she still lay eggs? None of them had started laying yet, they were only 4-5 months old. Do I need to worry if she's not laying? Not worried about getting eggs just want to make sure she stays healthy!!

They start on their own timetable but add in the stress of an attack and may be a bit more delayed I suspect. Give her time. Sorry.

Hiya :frow
Nice to meet you!
:welcome

I too had a lone survivor. We have a tremendous bond. It’s grate that you and your family give her attention.
Just keep telling her stories of her friends that will be coming & she’ll be fine. The chicken in my avatar is my survivor. I did not bring her inside (dogs) but I spent a lot of time with her. Good luck with your girl. Sounds like she’s in good hands. Best wishes
