Yes 7.45 pm here and I've just managed to get sat down 5 minutes!! Just not stopped today been all go here so now I can have my BYC fix

Late for me considering I go to bed about 10. But then again I've been up since 4.30 this morning so maybe once the birds are all in bed and locked in I maybe nodding off then!!

It's still as exciting now as when I first started incubating

I have another debatable question for when I probably build my incubator. Still air or forced? Are there drastic differences other than evening the temperature out?

I lost anoother chick in the shell. Pipped on the wrong side and died. I'm done hatching those eggs. Its legs and feet were deformed. It was weird

Oh no!!! I hate that when they die. It makes me sad but I know it happens so....what are you supposed to do with that.

I started my incubation history with my DIY incubator ....



I currently have one turner and a hatching tray, but I am about to do some modifications so that I will have two turners in it for next year. I used two light bulbs for the heat source, a 12 volt PC fan for air/heat circulation and a STC-1000 digital thermostat -- pretty much the same as Rush Lane's styrobaters but in a cabinet design. When I first tested I had trouble bringing it up to temps, but I lined the interior with 3/4 Styrofoam and it now holds temp like a boss. I have completed three hatches in it so far and have had an avg of 90% success rate with it.

When I first got my chickens I told my wife that I just wanted several breeds for eggs. Had no plans of hatching or anything else. Then I found out I had roosters and decided to keep one. The idea kind of sparked in my mind that I could hatch if I wanted to ... but when my nephew started hatching quail in his LG I got the fever.

I will be converting all my chickens over the next year or two to Delawares. Nothing against mixing or anything, but my personal preference is to have a purebred line of chickens. I like the idea of keeping track of statistics and breeding traits forward and working out problems and trying to establish a nice ( hopefully great some day ) line of birds. But again ... nothing against a mixed flock neither!!

LOL Maybe in some parts of England yes!! Not for me though I'm Yorkshire through and through born and bred here with the Yorkshire accent, would more like "Hey up" for me.
We do have a lot of polish and Latvians here but I'm sure that's not quite the same as Spanish!!

If and when I do mine I am going to make it a forced air. I just like the idea of the air being able to circulate. Its like using a convection oven compared to a conventional oven in my opinion.

Forced is the recommended, but I have to say, you still have to watch for warm/cold spots.

That looks nice.
I have nothing against pures, I just like variety...lol. If I had a huge farm and could have 20 coops then maybe 19 of them would be different purebreds....lol But since I have limited space, (not to mention energy) to get variety means mixed. We are getting ready to put up the 2nd coop which will have one end segregated off for the 6 Spitz I plan to kee so they stay "pure".
