She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

My biggest sellers are the cuckoo marans and silkies, both sell out within days. I like the cuckoos, because I can sell them sexed as soon as they come out of the brooder, and silkies sell pretty well as straight run young. I can get a really good price for silkie pullets if I keep them that long. I have 7 pens, but I could see me downsizing to 3 or 4 breeds in the next couple of years
I have 3600sq ft that I'm free ranging on right now, but I need to separate for pens come fall. How do you manage your pens? How big of coop? How many chickens per pen/coop and how many cocks per hen is ideal for production and selling? For instance, if I want to sell fertile Marans eggs do I need 4 or 8 hens to get a dozen within a 5 day window?

I love building but lumber is expensive here.

Now the bator says its 97.5, but checks with my temperature gun say 99.5-100.5 (left side, right side). It would be great is this is the reason...no wait, I am going to say this is definitely the reason for my massive last hatch failure, its been nailed, no doubt about it...full steam ahead!!

I haven't changed temperature on that bator since I bought it 5 weeks ago, it was factory set to 100F and the manual suggested leaving it there, so I did. I got 19/41 in the first hatch, but I was taking chicks as they dried. Quite possibly the temperature has been 103F all along...since today is the first time I double-checked it. The toys we forget we have...lolz...
Don't ever trust bator gages w/out checking and never trust manuals to correctly tell you how to incubate. That's my theory.

Here is a picture of Bubbles today.
Beutiful coloring, but that "cyst" is really weird.

Me again! Still can't catch up on the whole thread, so if anyone has asked me anything, I'll get back to ya (haha, I'm pretending I've been missed!)

But I have more good news.... the little guy that pipped on the wrong side (it was the wrong side to hit the air cell, not really the wrong end of the egg, because his head was in the correct end, his body was just turned around backwards)... Its out! It was the hardest zip, bang, pow I have ever seen! He punched it like a true champ. It is a super tiny little fella though, but looking good! Still have one polish pip working. And still nothing on Blobby McFizzle.... but its still just the last few hours of day 21, so I'm not panicking yet.

Yay on the hatchers!!! Boo on Blobby. He better make it out. I'll be so dissapointed.
Great. How many total did you set so I can let you know the parade requirements? Might as well make you too big for your britches, too

35%, and leaving it dry with the vent open...so hopefully no higher than 35% but it may get down to 25% as it did in my last hatch. Upward adjustments, if necessary, according to both weight loss and air sac size.

I don't know if I would let it go below 30%, but maybe Amy can chime in if she's around.
I aim for 30% but I don't worry about it unless it drops below 25%.

I think Amy's lower limit is 25, but she averages around 35. Her dry incubation isn't that much lower than what I use, but I had bad results at 35%. I think that has more to do with the difference in incubators than anything
I think incubator differences really matter. I had a girl trying to get the humidity up in her home made cooler bator to 75% like I run. (Her hygrometer had been checked.) She got it there, but when she posted the pic of the bator it looked like a rainforest in there...lol. It really showed the difference in bators. I run up to and past 80% with no condensation. I know, thanks to WV that the low humidity method does work outside of styro bators, and even the 40-45% is still low humidity (in comparison with the old standard of 50-60%).

I'm actually just trying to find out what my lockdown humidity will be. I've been keeping it around 40 in the am with a gradual decrease over 24 hrs to about 27. I'm in a styro. Using my own gauges. Duck eggs. Staggered hatch. 10 days between the first and second batch, 7 days between second and third. Excellent development. 1 quitter. 1 dud. 3 doubles. No fluctuations. Candled every other day. I'm a meddler.
Yuck on the staggered hatches...yay on the red team!!

Then stick around and wait for Amy and WV duckchick. Amy is great with styrofoam, and duckchick is, well, a duck chick

Hey up everyone :frow

Far too much to catch up on here :old Hope everyone is well and things are good for you all?

Quick update on my eggs. Lockdown tomorrow for the incubator eggs :yesss: Hoping they are all still good.
Other news too is that I have a broody polish :th Yes that's right a broody polish  Never thought one would go broody but she has.

Third day for her and she is not doing bad, has managed to damage an egg though getting up from the nest today so she is down to only 4 eggs now.
My first ever broody and I feel more worried than incubator hatching!

I lucked out on lumber. I have a local business that gives away scrap that is perfect for coops and pens. I shoot for at least 10sqft/bird in the pens, and 2.5/bird in the coops, but really my coops have much more room than that. I built them to handle larger flocks if I want. I have 6-7 hens/rooster with a very high fertility rate. My goal this year is to get 10-12 girls /rooster. The polish rooster is wearing his girls out, and the cuckoo marans girls are starting to look a little beat up, too. I have 7 cuckoo marans hens, at about 97% fertility, and those 7 girls lay 5-6 fertile eggs every day in the summer. 6 polish hens lay 3-4 eggs. The bantams are pretty prolific layers, but also go broody if the wind changes direction, so I lose some of their production a good bit. My cuckoo marans are also starting to brood, and so far I'm letting them hatch in the pens, but my egg production suffers for a few months, so next year I may start breaking them. Since they are the big sellers, I need them to lay and let me do the incubating.

:frow I'm hoping 27 are still good. When I candled day 14 they were all good and on track barring one that had a slightly larger air sac but the egg looks more porous than the others. It's obviously lost more moisture with having a porous shell. Chick looked good though with lots of movement so fingers crossed on that.
Just the one clear at day 7 candle.

I sure hopes she gets to hatch some too, she's a lovely friendly little bird and I think she would make a great mother hen. If she can see here babies, this is her when she was a little younger ~

I get condensation at 65-70%
As far as the
