So we just went down to the coop to do the selection process. 45 turkeys in all, three of them last year's breeding stock, remainder were bought, hatched from shipped eggs, or hatched from our eggs. I sold several off already as live birds, and had some losses during growout. Three are slated to sell on Friday, and six are to be kept for next year's breeders.
Keepers:
Son of Scooter (Golden Narragansett, the larger of the two. He has a great temperament, conformation, and color to boot. This Porter line has been exceptional, this one is Generation 5). He is about 4" taller than his father.
Oregon Gray (son of Scooter and Big Mamma, the BBB). He will sire my meat bird line, which will be a BB/heritage cross.)
Horrible photos, but he cannot refrain from tasting EVERYTHING. Keys, buttons, zipper tags, camera lenses, flashlights, shoelaces, fingers...
He towers over his father
Big Mamma, the now almost two year old BBB rescue hen. She is meaner than a rattlesnake and as good at brooding as an elephant, but she makes some really nice babies (if you get the eggs before she steps on them) and is a great layer. A tom has to be bold and quick to get the better of her!
Old Mamma, the almost three year old Golden Narragansett hen. She is my best layer, producing over 90 eggs this year, with exceptional fertility. She is really petite, though. After I get my 2016 eggs she will be allowed to retire to broody hen if she is so inclined.
An unrelated 2015 Bronze hen, from bought poults.
An unrelated 2015 Bourbon Red hen, from eggs from Jessshan8. His eggs produced beautiful poults (those I didn't kill in the EZ Bake LG)
I am looking for one or more white hens so I can breed more Oregon Grays. Without whites, it will take me two years to get more. These birds will be my unique "brand".
DH is completely on board with this program, even though Scooter is his favorite!
Ugh, so my husband has his heart set on getting some Silkies come Jan/Feb... Be it hatching eggs or chicks, he doesn't care. And here he called me crazy for wanting 4 specific breeds for egg colors/rarity/cuteness (bantam), now he wants silkies for broodiness and "poof-balls" for the acreage.
This is the guy who thought I was crazy for wanting to raise and hatch chickens. He's fallen head over heels in love with them and keeps looking for more breeds to add to our "collection".
I don't know what emoticon to use... So I'll use multiple to show how i feel!
for getting him on board with the chicken thing,
because he thought I was crazy for wanting chickens and now look at him,
just watching him with the baby chicks (he nursed one sick one back to health and put forth a bunch of effort to see him thru when I had pretty much given up!),
for wanting just as many breeds as I did/do... but not the same ones I want!! He's got a list beyond silkies... But silkies first according to him. He's really jumped into chicken parenthood with both feet. Helping me with the brooder, the coop, and he's sketching up plans for a larger, nicer coop too.
