Hey guys! We’re converting an old wooden shed into a coop right now..and it’s looking a little rough. It’s dirty - dead flies, cobwebs, possibly a bit of old oil from lawnmower or something. We only just moved in to this property.

I want to get the shed cleaned out and primed for conversion this weekend, and I’m trying to decide what I should use to clean and disinfect the inside of the building.

I am a first-time chicken keeper in Canada.

Thank you for your input!

If it never housed animals, there isn't a real need to disinfect it, just clean it.
I waited until after I finished all the construction. Then washed all original surfaces with TSP (phosphate free) with a scrub brush, rinsed all with a large sponge and clean water and let it dry. You can get something like Krud Kutter degreaser to use on the oil spots and rinse well when you are done.
I then used Kilz Max primer before painting everything white (except the floor). I used two coats of a can of "Oops" Behr Porch and Floor paint that I got at Home Depot for $9. This went on all horizontal surfaces.
Do you have a sketch of how you are going to layout your coop?

Since no previous animals in there, I dont think you need to disinfect.

you have an opportunity to cover the floor in some manner and keep out rodents better while covering the oil/gas/whatever stains. You could put down HWC (and partly up the walls) and cover with plywood or OSB or similar, then paint etc. even more important to exclude rodents If you have any plans to insulate. Some people cover the floor with a final layer of BlackJack (a rubberized roof coating) or vinyl flooring. Some just leave bare or paint.

inspect well and cover/patch any holes rodents can enter. Reinforce thin boards so hungry raccoons can’t forcibly enter, etc.

Looks like a good future coop!
