Shed Roof Coop Layout

Since you are in Maine, and it is cold there, right?

I would face the higher side to the south and have windows on that side to let in some passive solar effect, as well as the description that Intheswamp gave you.
Good luck.

Not sure I foillow... The high side would be one of the 8' walls and low side the other 8' wall.
The 4' walls would be the ends of the coop.
Can you try explaining the roost placement a little more?
Thanks, good input.

If you have a shed roof, then one side of the coop would have to be higher, that is how you get the one sided slope, like in the picture of the different roof styles.
Otherwise, it is a gable or some other roofline structure.

I'm sorry - you misunderstood. I misquoted 'Intheswamp'... I was asking what he/she meant by a portion of their post above. I do understand a shed roof structure but his roost placement description confuses me.
If I put the roost on the high side, wouldn't that span the 8' dimension?

Well, in Great Britain it's called a 'pent' roof.

As a general rule, the smaller the angle of the roof slope then the more support it will require.

Mark.

I'm thinking just the opposite of what you describe... I'm envisioning the slope of the roof to run the length of the 8' wall rather than the length of the short 4' wall. That would create a cozy pocket at the back (high end) of the coop for the chickens to hunker down in during bad/cold weather. But, that is just my thoughts.

I'm nearing completion of a shed roof style house which incorporated the roof into the overall coop, covering part of the run. The house footprint is 5' x 5'. The front side, south-facing, is 5' tall and the back side is 4' tall. The back, north-facing, has the nesting boxes, the south and west side have windows and the west side has the pop door. The east side has the side-access clean-out door. My roost will run west-to-east off the front wall, taking advantage of the windows and natural light. I have ventilation between the rafters and roof, front and back, taking advantage of the roof slope as well as a screen window on the west wall over the window.

Current (nearing completion).

I'm still pending the placement of the feeders. I'm deciding between placing PVC feeders in the rear corners near the nesting boxes or to incorporate a tray style feeder in the backside of the door. I'm planning to use nipple style watering system as well.
