Shedding

On of my 8 month old hens is loosing lots of feathers. She is an auracauna. What is happening? I am a little worried about her.

She may just be molting. If so than you shouldn't be worried. Are any new feathers growing back in that you can see? Is she acting sick or hurt in any other way? By the way,

! Great to have you in our community! I concur with TwinsLoveChicks - sounds like it could be a molt. Is she your only chicken? Are others in the flock likewise losing feathers? I might be hallucinating but a 8 month old is not a full grown hen its a pullet.If its a pullet check for mites and lice.I'm pretty sure a chicken over 12 months old will molt anything below that wont.

It could be a molt, which although quite unusual in an 8 month old (generally occurs at 1 or 1.5 years) can happen. Otherwise, you might be looking at feather picking or a similar issue. Is she developing pin feathers?
