*Sheltered Chicks here...Getting frustrated!!*

Ok so my silkie chicks will be 6 weeks tuesday. They are still under the light not with the light really low on top of them but hanging about 2 or 3 feet above them in a large dog kennel ( In my garage....)

Everytime I try (keyword "try") to cut the light out during the day they peep and peep and act like their freezing so I cut it back on!

I want to get them out of the dog kennel and into their new coop but Im afraid they will be to cold. I wish I could run a heat lamp out there but I cant. Oh I was thinking about putting them out during the day and back in the kennel at night with light on.

What is the lowest they can be outside in? Please help me stop stressing over this. Everyone says "I have to let them grow up..."

When you turn the light off, you are changing something, and chickens don't like change. Just as the first night they are in the dark, they will likely peep a lot of or all night. They'll get used to it. If they are still in your house at 6 weeks, I promise you they aren't cold.

I would think that silkies would need more heat than other chickens.

It would help to know where you are located. You can put that on your profile.
I noticed that your post had over 20 views and no one had answered.. perhaps because they don't know where you are.
If you are in Maine or North Dakota, they'll need to be inside much longer.
If you are in Florida or South Texas or Arizona, they should be fine outside in a couple more weeks. Unless it gets below freezing.

I put a LONG (It's over 70 feet long) extension cord out to my coop.

And you can leave them with no lamp in your garage for a hardening off period. Mine peeped alot too. UT I had to let them grow up, and it worked, they're big now

Okay, you are talking about my adopted "grandchildren" here. It is still a bit cold here in NC so I wouldn't stress about it to much. They may make a lot of racket for a few days but they really don't need a light except at night now. Start weaning them by turning the light off for a few hours a day and gradually increase the length of time it is off till they don't have it on during the day at all. They should be out in the coop with Gracie and Jill in a couple of weeks.
