Hello y'all! I just joined and am happy to have found BYC. About ten years ago I was working in an FFA class at a high school. The teachers brought in hundreds of baby chicks, which the students were to take home with them. I'd never seen so many chicks, and they were all chirping like crazy... Except for one. It was a little yellow ball, no beak showing. I picked it up and the teachers said it was not long for this world. I found a way to drip some water into its beak and it started to come alive. I took him home, my first chicken, and named him Shicken. He grew and grew, and it was time to put him outside. Being new to chickens, I put him in an uncovered old dog pen and he did great for weeks. One morning I went out to feed before work, and he was gone. Sadly, apparently a chicken-hawk or some other animal came along. All I found were feathers and his legs. So I buried what was left, and haven't had another chicken, until yesterday. I stopped by a friend's house and there was a singular chicken in a box, which I was told was the only survivor of many. Shicken the Second came home with me, I got out my baby chick waterer, filled the bottom with marbles and fed some chicken-starter. We are becoming fast friends. There's my story. I have a lot to learn about raising a chicken and look forward to meeting and chatting with you BYC folks.
P.S. I'm going to post a few questions in the "Raising Backyard Chickens" Forum. Please help me out
