Shingling a coop roof

It is mostly preference as far as vinyl versus metal. If you want a white edge go with vinyl. I use metal more often since most of my roofing experience involves metal roofs.

Aluminum drip edge is pretty much the contractor's choice for materials. It does not crack or break in cold weather and is easy to trim. I will try to post pics of my setup for a reference. In the future, Itis always a good practice to include about a foot of roof overhang whenever you build any structure. The following are advantages to doing so:

  1. An overhang (I recommend at least 8", but prefer 12") provides shade for the sides of the structure which keeps rains and the sun from directly contacting the exterior walls. This maintains the aesthetics longer and more importantly, keeps them cooler.
  2. Overhangs shed water from rains away from the footings/foundation of your structure, which minimizes movement/settling.
  3. Overhangs allow for a proportionate amount of additional ventilation from the eaves and rake edges of your structure.

There may be other benefits, but these I feel are the main ones that I enjoy.

Good luck with your trimming out process!

Excellent points! Especially about the foundation protection that we'll now largely miss out on. At the time we were trying to 1. keep cost down and 2. avoid a seam in the roof that would potentially leak. Of course, now that we're done and the coop is otherwise a solid construction - those reasons are ridiculous. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the advice about the material the edging ought to be - I would have thought vinyl because of its flexibility - didn't think about cracking - thank you!

Also on a non-construction reason for having a further overhang, if you have venting/windows with only wire covering them, the overhang will reduce the amount of rain from blowing in through the windows. That was my reason for choosing a 12" overhang.

Too late now but given that this is a coop and not a house, you should be fine!
