For my own curiosity I thought I would do a poll. It is said that shipped hatching eggs carry only a 50% rate of hatch.

This is a poll on when you see a majority of quitters for shipped hatching eggs. Chicken/duck. You can choose 2 options in case you have a mix of say early quitters & late quitters.

Please note: late death would be considered seeing movement when you put them into lockdown but then they don’t hatch.

If you want to leave a comment about other insights or facts feel free.

I frequently see veining develop between day 3-5 and then a blood ring on day 8 when candling for shipped eggs, however my last batch of shipped chicken eggs I had two late quitters and one that pipped and died, it was also my first experience with an egg exploding in the incubator on day 10, so I suspect bacterial contamination as the real culprit. That was also the first time I skipped day 8 candling.

That’s great to know!

I currently have 24 Ancona eggs in the incubator that were shipped to me. Most had detached aircells. I followed the proper protocol & on day 9 candled without taking them out of incubator. Every one had veigning & non looked like they quit so it got me thinking. Hence the poll.

I would have marked developed but quit day 3-7 but you didn't have that option.

I have shipped eggs from one state over- day 19/20 and 24 shipped eggs, 4 clears, 2 death rings and 2 developed longer and quit. 16 are currently in Lockdown. I only count the developed eggs so I am saying 16/20 to lockdown.

I have another batch from NC, diff coasts, currently developing in a diff incubator. Day 5 there were 12 in that batch. Their aircells looked saddled. 6/12 didn't develop, or death ringed 6 are developing.

Ah yes I believe I lumped did not develop into the first 7 days.

Wait you have eggs in the incubator that were shipped & 19/20 days old & you still locked down 16?! That’s amazing!!

My eggs only came from a 1 province over (I’m in Canada) & came with all but maybe 4 aircells loose. I’ve been biting my nails over here & hoping they don’t all just quit on me. I candled on day 9 & was quite surprised they were all developing though a few looked behind (I didn’t see death ring). Currently day 13 & I’m itching to candle on day 18 or so.

I haven’t kept good records, but seems most start some development, then quit later. A few never start - maybe not fertilized but shipping damage also equally likely (detached air cells, “scrambled” inside to the point there’s air bubbles). A few die during lockdown, but if I recall those were probably related to my incubator conditions or something related to me (like messing with them too much!). I think a couple malpositioned also.

The most hatch rate I’ve gotten is 50%, depending how I calculate. Typically have two batches from different sources going at the same time, so one source might actually be better or worse than the other.

That’s pretty much what I have my best case hatch rate set at is 50. I have 24 eggs in.

These Ancona ducks are rare in my area so I’d like to test out the breed for egg & meat purposes. Bring in new blood when I can.

My cemanis, most either didn't show development or stopped at about a week. Had one that didn't hatch due to a double membrane.

My quail were just all over the place, though still had a few that were in the week range

Update on my own eggs:

Day 18 on my Ancona duck eggs. I candled today & removed 9. Most stopped within the 1st 7 days & a couple between 8-18 days.

The other 15 are moving. I’m hoping they all make it too lockdown & very few late deaths.
