shipped hatching eggs ethics question

I think I would have the seller insure the eggs maybe for a length of time. If they don't arrive on time he could get his money back and reship. Is this posible in the future? It sounds reasonable. This time I would do as the others say and candle after 7 days. Good luck. Jean

I doubt many people are going to like this but here it goes.

Shipped eggs are always a gamble. If I get a 50% hatch on shipped
eggs during the spring months I'm happy.

Shipped eggs in the December cold and abuse the boxes get at the
PO during the holiday season is insane. I hope for a 20% hatch on
eggs like these (quail excluded because they do well).

My bators are full of shipped eggs right now, most from Ebay. I paid
between $4 & $12 plus shipping. I'm even sending out some quail
eggs to a friend this morning.

So, my point is keep your expectations reasonable. In addition, a couple
extra days on the eggs should be the least of your worries.

Best of luck with your hatch. Spring is right around the corner.

Shipped eggs are a gamble in any case. Eggs are good as long as 14 days after being laid. How else does a hen collect a large clutch to set?

I would put them in the incubator and keep going with them. Candle at day 7 or 10.

This time of year the shipping is more risky with the holiday rush and delaid delivery.

Well, I will tell you this...
I received eggs dated (by them, written on)13 days before the day I got them in the mail. They ALL hatched. Now these were from a BYC'er who I trusted anyway, but I am guessing the ebayer is a good person too.

On the other hand, at about the same time, I got a box of eggs less than a week old when I got them and NONE of them hatched.

I bet you will be surprised!!!!!!

I am pretty sure that you cannot insure eggs.

In order for something to be insured, if there is a problem, the item has to go back to the post office, where it will go to a center where it will be kept until the claim is completed. If the person receiving does not give the item to the post office, no claim can be made. The person receiving has to do it. The person selling can file the claim, but the purchaser has to cooperate.
An egg would be considered perishable, and I am sure that the post office does not have a building full of perishable items that were destroyed and stinking up the place just for a insurance claim.

We recently changed our shipping service to FedEx ground. One neat thing is you can set up your own account on line and just drop packages at any nearby service center. No waiting in line

wow glad i'm not alone just got eggs from ebay this morning that i bought on dec 6.last week after waiting a couple days i mailed him and he told me he just put them in the mail tueday morning so i waited until monday and mailed him then he told me he just sent the eggs that morning and gave me a conformation number

Wow! Thanks for all the input. I certainly understand that the seller isn't responsable for the USPS mistakes, but if you're gonna charge 13 bucks to ship 6 eggs, don't you think that a dollar of that should go to delivery conformation? I, myself, sell a few eggs from time to time, and have had similar problems with the shipping, but everytime, I just sent out replacement eggs. I look at it as the eggs actually cost me almost nothing to produce. When I need more, I just go out to the coop and get a few more. Not all, but some of these Ebay sellers are trying to get rich.

If the seller that I'm currently involved with were to ask for me to send out shipping cost to try again, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I know that the seller isn't obligated to send out a new batch, but don't you think that for one less omelet that it would do a world of good to keep the customer happy, and hope for good feedback and repeat business? Hi reluctance to "make things right" just demonstrates to me that "making a buck" is his prime concern.

Maybe I'm just "old school", but if the situation were reversed, he would already have replacements headed his way.
