So, I just got a great wooden shipping crate from work and my hubby and I want to convert it into a chicken coop. What's great is, if it our little project turns out well...we can potentially get more of these crates as they come in every couple of months and the warehouse manager told me he would always give me first dibs in exchange for some eggs. (sounds like a deal to me!)

Can you guys post pictures of coops/design ideas/runs where you have used shipping crates? We are trying to figure out the best way to set it up... Also, if you have any do's, dont's or wish I would have done something different type suggestions from your own projects please include these with the pictures.

Thanks for your help in advance!

There were some HUGE wooden crates for free on the Houston Craigslist the other day, but I don't have any way to get 'em home! These were 8Wx8Dx5H, which would have been a perfect little coop. They even had hinged doors!

Needless to say, I didn't get to make one. But I have links to dozens of coops and coop-building sites here: http://www.countrychickens.com/country_chickens_4_005.htm

I will check out the site. The one I got has hinge doors as well and opens up to make a ramp. This will be PERFECT to easily clean it out! Thanks for the link.

Hi all, I'm in Western North Carolina and am interested in the shipping crate idea. I don't know where to get one. Can anybody tell me what kind of business would receive equipment in a crate like this? Thanks a bunch. [email protected]

Any industrial type company. Or a company that uses heavy equipment, like manufacturers of washer/dryers, refrigerators. You could try sellers of this stuff too, they have to receive them in something...
