Ufff. Got a call at 8:30!that the chicks were at the Post Office. When I got there the room was eerily quiet. I thought, probably the chicks were warm and happy because it had only taken 2 days (actually less than 48 hrs) instead of the usual three for them to get here. I said: I don’t hear any chirping! And the post master said, yes, I am afraid they are all dead - there are no sounds and no movement. What??? Sure enough I opened the box and there were 4 lifeless chicks splayed out in the box. I stared at them for a bit and thought I saw the tiniest breathing movements from one of them. Then she opened and closed her beak. I hightailed it home and warmed her up in my hands. My daughter got a hot water bottle, and i held her sitting on it with my hand over it fo an hour or so. She cam to and started making sounds. She moved a bit and stood up. She finally opened her eyes. I tried getting some sugar water into her and at the end of the hour she actually started taking a few sips on her own. She is resting in the brooder now. She was constantly falling over backwards at first, staggering backwards, using her wings for balance. An hour or two later I actually saw her take some forward steps! She is resting now and I go and get a bit of water with Nutridrench into her every 20 min or so. Still not eating or moving around much. I just have a little bit of hope for her. We’ll see.
I felt the heat pack and it felt cool - seems like it never got activated... Meyer was very good and are sending me replacement chicks next week. Still, so sad 😞. The little survivor is a Black Copper Marans. Keeping my fingers crossed!

That's great one survived . When you order chicks it is best to order a larger quantity . I know from past experience . The warmth of more chicks keeps them alive from their own body heat . Years ago most hatcheries had a 25 bird minimum . I know that makes things rough for someone that only wants 5 but if you have friends that want some things can be worked out . Myers is a good hatchery . Good luck .

Don’t worry too much. I have gotten chicks in the mail 5 times now, a couple of times they took three days to arrive (hatch Monday, arrival Thursday mid day) and never once had a dead chick on arrival. I have lost one though on two occasions within the first couple of days.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
One piece of advice: Look at the detailed shipping history. If they are being held at a distribution center near you, you can go and pick them up there. I have done that once when they didn’t make it on the afternoon truck and they were going to hold them at the center over night. Google the name of the center with the area code for the area to get the phone number. You won’t be able to get it on the regular USPS website, and your local post office might not want to give it to you. The USPS is a pain that way.
I called Meyer and they replaced all my chicks - hatch day is next Wednesday. Hoping for a much better trip for those chickies!

Thanks! Yes, I have ordered from them before and have had no troubles. I usually order 4 chicks at a time because I only have room for 16 and I need to replace older hens who died from time to time... My friends don’t keep chickens. I have never had this happen before, not with Meyer’s not with MPC. I think the heat pad just didn’t work this time.
