Has anyone observed this behavior? I took my 5 week old chicks out for a trip to the backyard. It was about 65 degrees but sunny. Two of them started dust bathing and they seemed happy for awhile but them one of them started shivering but still dust bathing. Is it possible that they dust bathe to stay warm as well as stay clean? I'm a little puzzled at the behavior.

Nothing to worry abouy. If the dirt was cool that can cayse then to shiver,or even a little cool wind on chicks can make them coldm

I kniw my chcikens get in cool almost mud mixed type dirt when it is warm out. They do not do it to stay clean, they do it to keep bugs off of them.

Thanks TwoRoos. I held the cold one in the crook of my arm and it kept on behaving as if it was still dust bathing- squirming and rocking back and forth....like someone else said- they are almost in a trance when they dust bathe...
