Two days ago my family and I went to feed store that had recently opened in our area. We 're suckers for chicks, and we bought to EE's from them. NEVER AGAIN!! I should've known when

1. We weren't allowed to touch.
2. We didn't get to pick out our two chicks

Then after arriving home

1. The chicks weren't as aware as the ones from the other store
2. They wouldn't drink, or eat the first night
3. I opened the door on their kennel and they have no interest in coming out!

Then last night I go in to do our bed check and one of them is just sitting there listless. I pick her up to inspect and she is covered with these little red bugs!

I've been researching and have come to the conclusion they are mites!

NOW

They are only a week old tops! How am I supposed to treat them beings as they are so young? Not to mention I have other chicks in the room too, can the mites spread to my other EE babies? I am so mad

I will never goto this store again!! This just proves if you find a good thing stick with it! I hope I don't lose these babies and am going to our regular store today to see if they can help me!

For you AZ peeps I live in Phoenix, so beware!

It sounds to me like mites... try some sugar water and scrambled eggs top pep them up.. I went thru a similar experience a few years ago and learned my lesson.. Always check your chicks before buying..If they wont let you hold them or pick your own DONT buy them.. Good luck with your lil ones..

DE will NOT get rid of the mites, it is ok to use small amounts of the poultry dust on them as I have used it on chicks that were just a few days old. DE is used as a preventative once you have gotten rid of the mites. Clean out their brooder and dust it with the poultry dust, dust the chicks (I just dab a bit of the powder on my finger and spread it on them that way). All should be back to normal in no time. If left untreated it won't take much time for those little blood sucking mites to kill off a weak chick.

Thanks ppl so much. I am waiting for the feed store to open now! I guess traveling the 25 miles to the store isn't really as bad as we thought when it comes to getting good stock!
